The National Weather Service (NWS) in Melbourne reported that a "brief landspout/tornado" likely occurred on August 23, resulting in minor damage to the area surrounding Jessica Clinton Park. The weather service issued its statement at 7:45 p.m., shortly after a tornado warning for portions of southeastern St. Lucie and northeastern Martin counties expired at 7:00 p.m.
Assessing Storm Damage
According to William Ulrich, the warning coordination meteorologist at the NWS, preliminary information from St. Lucie and Martin County Emergency Management, along with storm spotter calls and video footage submitted to local media, indicates that a landspout likely occurred near Southbend Boulevard and Southeast Navy Avenue in Port St. Lucie.
Ulrich noted that the event lofted a small amount of debris and produced minor damage. The NWS is currently working to communicate with public safety officials and gather additional information to better understand the extent and nature of the reported impacts.
Meteorological Context
An earlier bulletin from the NWS had indicated that the landspout likely occurred in the area of the Treasure Coast Square Mall in Jensen Beach. However, this was updated to reflect the Jessica Clinton Park location based on further data analysis. Ulrich explained that a landspout is typically a short-lived tornado developing from shallow circulation near the ground beneath a growing thunderstorm, rather than from a well-organized rotating storm.
Because the rotation associated with such systems is often confined to the lowest levels, radar signatures can be subtle or absent. The NWS stated that once additional information becomes available, officials will determine whether a formal storm survey is warranted on August 24 morning.
