Polk County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a fatal traffic collision that claimed the lives of two students Monday morning. The accident occurred when a school bus carrying passengers from Winter Haven High School rolled over near Lake Alfred.

The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. on State Road 64, just west of its intersection with County Road 559. Authorities confirmed that one of the victims was identified as a tenth-grade student at Winter Haven High School. The identity and age of the second victim have not been publicly released pending notification of next of kin.

At least six other students were transported to local hospitals for evaluation after the crash. While specific injuries remain under review, emergency responders treated several individuals on-scene before transporting them to nearby medical facilities in Polk County.

Circumstances and Investigation

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is leading the investigation into the rollover. Initial reports suggest that weather conditions may have played a role, as rain was falling in the area at the time of the crash. However, investigators are not ruling out other factors such as speed or mechanical failure.

"We are treating this as an active criminal investigation," said FHP spokesperson Lt. David Smith during a brief press update on Monday afternoon. "Our primary focus is determining why the bus left the roadway and rolled over."

The school district has suspended normal operations for Winter Haven High School for the remainder of the day to allow counselors to support affected students and staff. Superintendent Dr. Mark Walker issued a statement expressing condolences to the families involved.

"Our hearts are broken for the families who have lost loved ones in this tragic accident," said Dr. Walker. "We are committed to providing every resource necessary to support our community during this difficult time."

The bus driver, whose name has not been released by authorities due to ongoing privacy protocols, is cooperating with investigators. Police have not indicated whether the driver was cited or arrested at this stage.

Community Response and Safety Concerns

This incident marks a significant blow to the Winter Haven community, which has long been known for its tight-knit school districts and agricultural heritage. Local leaders have called for increased attention to road safety in rural areas of Polk County, more context in Florida Man Fleeing Traffic Stop Crashes Into School Bus Carrying 19 Children.

State Representative Mike Hill (R-Winter Haven) released a statement urging caution on state roads during inclement weather. "These tragedies remind us how fragile life can be," said Rep. Hill. "I urge all Floridians, especially those transporting children, to exercise extreme care when driving in rain or fog."

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has launched a review of the road segment where the crash occurred. Engineers will assess visibility markers, guardrails, and drainage systems along State Road 64.

Impact on School District Operations

The Polk County Public Schools district typically transports over 50,000 students daily across its vast network of approximately 13 million acres. Safety protocols for school transportation are among the most strictly regulated in the state.

In previous years, the district has faced scrutiny regarding bus driver training and vehicle maintenance schedules following several minor accidents. However, no major safety violations have been cited since a comprehensive audit was completed last fiscal year.

Parents of Winter Haven High School students gathered outside the school’s main entrance Monday evening to lay flowers and light candles in memory of the deceased students. The vigil lasted until dusk as community members sought closure.

The two victims were transported via ambulance to Bayfront Health Winter Haven, one of the region's primary trauma centers. Medical staff have not released further details regarding their conditions beyond confirming that both succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.
