Upon arrival, officials discovered the bodies of Melanie Hyer, along with her 11-year-old daughter Savannah and 8-year-old Sienna Whiten.
Investigation Details
Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office investigators confirmed that all three victims sustained stab wounds. The girls' father, identified as Ryan Whiten, was also found at the scene with fatal injuries. Law enforcement officials stated their preliminary belief is that Whiten killed his family members before taking his own life. In response to the tragedy, friends, classmates, teachers, and community members gathered on Friday evening at Our Lady of Divine Providence Catholic Church in Sweetwater. The mass was organized specifically to honor the victims. Many attendees wore white clothing as a symbol of remembrance for Melanie Hyer and her children.
"I don't like to think about the kids suffering when it happened. I just want to ask God for their souls," said Penny, whose daughter attended school with Sienna Whiten. She noted that her child is leaning on friends as she tries to process the loss of a classmate.
Outside the church, Savannah's classmates, accompanied by their parents, shared personal memories of their friend. Descriptions of Savannah included traits such as being kind, cheerful, and supportive. Classmates highlighted her love for swimming and her warm personality during school years.

"I miss her a lot because she was such a good friend," said Miranda, one of Savannah's classmates. Other friends recalled how Savannah often helped others feel included in social settings.
