NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 62-year-old retired U.S. Army Desert Storm veteran was killed on June 30 following a fatal shooting in the parking lot of a Walmart located at 7900 West McNab Road in North Lauderdale, Florida. Bart Diguglielmo, originally from Hammonton, New Jersey, died after being shot just before 12:30 p.m., according to a news release from the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO). He was pronounced dead at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale.

Investigation and Self-Defense Claims

The Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives are currently handling the investigation. A woman involved in the altercation remained at the scene after the incident and told investigators she acted in self-defense, according to reports from CBS News Miami. The suspect has not been publicly identified by authorities.

Once the BSO completes its investigation, the case will be turned over to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office to determine whether criminal charges will be filed against the woman. Authorities are reviewing evidence including cellphone and dashcam footage captured during the confrontation before the shooting occurred.

Evidence from Video Footage

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported on details derived from video evidence of the incident. Dashcam footage shows Diguglielmo approaching a woman near her vehicle, with the woman pointing a gun at him as he raised his arms in the air. A separate cellphone clip captured the woman telling Diguglielmo to "walk away" moments before a single shot was fired.

The incident has drawn attention from local media and law enforcement agencies across South Florida. The BSO continues to process evidence at the scene while maintaining an active investigation into the circumstances that led to the fatal exchange of gunfire in the retail parking lot.

Family Response

Diguglielmo’s daughter, Amanda, spoke with Local 10 regarding her father's death. She stated she came forward because she wanted her father remembered for who he truly was rather than how media coverage portrayed him. His sister also provided background on his military service and subsequent career as a nurse to CBS News Miami.
