Florida Deputy Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on I-95 While Responding to Call
Homicide Agent Kevin Morris, 55, died Saturday night after a collision with a wrong-way driver near Brevard County.
A Homicide Agent with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office was killed on Saturday night after being struck by a driver traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 95. The incident occurred while the deputy, identified as Kevin Morris, was responding to an officer-involved shooting that had taken place earlier that evening.
Details of the Fatal Collision
Sheriff Wayne Ivey confirmed the tragedy on Sunday, stating that Agent Morris, 55, was en route to the scene when he encountered a vehicle traveling south in the northbound lanes. According to Sheriff Ivey, another officer ahead on the road reported seeing the wrong-way driver just seconds before calls regarding a crash began coming into dispatch.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) received separate reports of a driver making an illegal U-turn in the northbound lanes and proceeding southward against traffic. The vehicle involved was driven by a 26-year-old woman who had reportedly left a wedding and was traveling back to Kissimmee. The collision resulted in a head-on impact that killed both Morris and the other driver.
Investigation Underway
FHP Lieutenant Channing Taylor stated at this time that it remains unknown why the female driver was proceeding in the wrong direction on such a major thoroughfare. Authorities have indicated that a toxicology test and an autopsy will be conducted to determine if impairment or a medical emergency were contributing factors to the crash.
The Florida Highway Patrol has assumed leadership of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident. Investigators are working to piece together the timeline of events leading up to the collision on Interstate 95, one of Florida's busiest corridors, as we reported in Fatal Shooting Investigated After Trespassing Complaint in Deland, Florida.
Community Mourning
Sheriff Ivey expressed profound grief over the loss of his colleague, describing Morris as "one of the nicest people you'll ever meet in your life." He noted that the agency and the community are absolutely devastated by the event. The sheriff emphasized the personal impact of losing a member of their team.
Morris leaves behind a wife and daughter. His decision to rejoin law enforcement was inspired by his daughter's enrollment in a law enforcement academy several years prior, following a previous stint with Palm Bay Police Department where he served for over ten years before joining the Brevard County Sheriff's Office in 2021.
