BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Historic flash floods have severely damaged the Painted Horse Rescue animal sanctuary located on Valkaria Road, leaving parts of the property submerged and disrupting recovery efforts. Rising floodwaters swept across the facility after a recent storm caused water levels to rise two feet in pastures and several inches inside the first floor of the home. The event forced owners to perform emergency rescues for animals trapped by the rising waters.

Emergency Animal Rescues

Jill Helsel, president of Painted Horse Rescue, detailed the chaotic scene as floodwaters inundated the property. She described pulling a freezing and drowning goat directly from the water into her home shower to save its life. Meanwhile, she coordinated with family members who led the rest of the herd to safety in a workshop.

The situation required immediate action for other animals on the premises. The rescue team scrambled to hoist three giant tortoises into the bed of a pickup truck just before their enclosure became too deep for safe access. Despite these urgent measures, Helsel noted that her horses stood in high water for three consecutive days until levels began to recede enough for them to check the land, more context in Severe Flooding Claims Lives in Palm Bay; Hundreds Rescued After Storm Hits Brevard County.

Destroyed Supplies and Ongoing Recovery

The flooding has caused significant material loss for the sanctuary. All stored hay and grain supplies were ruined as floodwaters entered submerged trailers and barns. This marks the first time in a decade that the property has experienced such severe flooding. "We all around here have never been through something like this ever. It's awful," Helsel said, describing the situation as a "crazy nightmare." While every animal survived the storm, recovery remains difficult, more context in Severe Flooding Claims Lives in Palm Bay; Hundreds Rescued After Storm Hits Brevard County.

Community Support Needed

Recovery efforts are currently stalled because the driveway and neighboring canals remain flooded. Neighbors in the area do not live in documented flood zones and lack specific flood insurance coverage. Officials have not yet confirmed whether local families will receive financial assistance or emergency relief for damaged structures and vehicles, as reported by AP News.

The Painted Horse Rescue is urgently seeking community donations of hay and animal feed to replace what was lost during the storm. Residents interested in supporting the sanctuary's recovery can find more information on how to help through official channels associated with the rescue organization.
