Donalds and Jolly Advance to Florida Gubernatorial General Election

ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida voters have selected the candidates who will compete for the state’s next governor following Tuesday night primaries. Republican Representative Byron Donalds and Democrat David Jolly, a former member of Congress, won their respective party nominations, setting up a general election showdown to determine leadership after eight years under Ron DeSantis.

Republican Primary Dynamics

NBC News projects that Rep. Donalds defeated a crowded field in the Republican primary. The campaign was characterized by intense competition and personal attacks from rivals, including Lt. Gov. Jay Collins and former state House Speaker Paul Renner. Donalds entered the general election with significant financial resources, having raised nearly $100 million during his bid.

President Donald Trump endorsed Donalds in May, a move that solidified his standing among primary voters. Other candidates faced distinct challenges; Collins was appointed by DeSantis as lieutenant governor last year but saw their relationship deteriorate without an official endorsement from the outgoing governor. Renner, who served as speaker during much of DeSantis’ tenure, also struggled to gain traction against Donalds.

Democratic Field Consolidation

In contrast to the heated Republican contest, David Jolly faced minimal opposition in his party’s primary. Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings suspended his campaign in June following a cancer diagnosis, effectively clearing the path for Jolly. Former state Representative Dottie Joseph also ran but did not gain significant momentum.

Jolly is viewed as a moderate Democrat who previously served as a Republican member of Congress before changing parties. His candidacy represents an effort by Democrats to rebuild after losing previous high-profile gubernatorial races, including the 2018 contest where their nominee narrowly lost to DeSantis.

State Political Context

The upcoming general election carries significant weight for both parties in Florida. Republicans have controlled all levels of state government and have not lost a race for governor since 1994. However, the political landscape has shifted following DeSantis’ 2022 re-election victory by more than 20 percentage points.

That historic margin prompted claims that Florida had transformed from a swing state into a reliably Republican stronghold. Jolly’s campaign is seen as a test case to determine if the Democratic Party can remain competitive in this new political identity or if the GOP will extend its decades-long grip on the governorship.
