Gov. Ron DeSantis announced nearly $63 million in upgrades to rest stops and truck parking along Florida’s Turnpike on Tuesday, marking a significant component of an ongoing $20 billion plan to improve and widen the cross-state highway. Speaking at a news conference in Central Florida, the governor highlighted these investments as part of a broader effort to reduce congestion and enhance roadways for the state's growing population.

Infrastructure Expansion Details

The improvements are integral to a massive project designed to widen the Turnpike, which extends from Miami to Wildwood where it connects with Interstate 75. According to an FDOT graphic, when the project is complete, the main line through South and Central Florida will feature at least six lanes, with certain areas expanding to 10 or more lanes. The total expansion covers 965 lane miles, and officials stated that the project is currently 55% complete.

Nicola Liquori, executive director of the Turnpike, noted on Tuesday that travelers have logged approximately 9.5 trillion miles traveled on the highway's main line over the last year alone. The facility serves an average of more than 3 million customers daily, according to FDOT data. DeSantis emphasized that as Florida has grown, major investments in transportation infrastructure are necessary to maintain efficiency and safety for all users.

Service Plaza Amenities

Nearly $8.5 million of the allocated funds will be spent on improving amenities and customer services at six of the Turnpike’s eight service plazas. DeSantis indicated that these upgrades may involve bringing in new companies or refreshing existing stations to address wear and tear. The enhancements include dining options such as Zaxby’s and Jimmy John’s, aiming to provide better choices for travelers, as we reported in Florida Approves $250M to Cover Immigration Detention Debts.

Additionally, nearly $54 million will be used to add 150 new parking spaces at the Turkey Lake and Canoe Creek service plazas in Central Florida. FDOT Secretary Jared Perdue spoke at the same conference, stressing that trucks are critical users of the system for delivering goods and services throughout the state. He highlighted a significant shortage of truck parking across Florida as a primary driver for these specific infrastructure additions.
